Your stool is an excellent way to show the overall health of your body and this is especially useful in children though not always accurate. For children it is not easy to gauge whether their health is affected or the colour of their stool is due to something they ate because children have the habit of putting almost everything in their mouth which is then passed out in their stool affecting the colour. Though this is the case most of the time in some cases the colour of green poop in toddlers may be an underlying issue that could accelerate in the long run needing immediate attention.

Causes of Green Poop in Toddlers

Its important for your kids overall health that you found out what is causing the green poop. Toddlers love to put everything in their mouth as mentioned above so it could be anything but it does require your attention. Given below are a few instances that cause green poop in toddlers.

  1. Meconium

It is quite normal to see that newborn babies in the first few days of their lives pass meconium based stool that is rich in all the things that the baby digested when it was in the womb and may include bile, water, and amniotic fluid and so on. The stool turns yellow and green in the first three days of birth after the baby starts to digest breast milk.

  1. Dietary Causes

One of the most important things that affect the colour of stool in children is the dietary intake. There are many foods out there that can actually contribute towards green poop in toddlers which may include green vegetables or any foods that have artificial green colouring like ice cream and so on. The best way to make sure that the green colour is caused by dietary intake is to cut your baby off this food for a few days to see if the poop turns normal again.

  1. Medication and Supplement

Stool colour can change to green due to a number of medical reasons as well such as artificial supplements, vitamins that are green in colour and medication in general that has a green base to it. it is also seen that a baby’s poop turns green in colour due to the use o f laxatives to help a baby go to the toilet easily which speeds up the process to a great extent causing green poop in toddlers. Medications play an important role at times in causing this phenomenon.

  1. Diarrhea

For the children suffering with diarrhea this is a common issue because at this time your stool is bright green in colour because it does not spend enough time in the stomach in order go through the digestive system in a proper manner due to rapid transit caused by the diarrhea.

  1. Bile Secretion

Decreased time in the colon for transit of bile causes rapid transit that does not allow the bile that is naturally green to mix into the poop and turn brown in order to facilitate a normal defecation of brown stool. Since the bile is green before it mixes into the intestine you will see that the poop is green as well due to excessive bile secretion which slows down the system.

  1. Food Poisoning

The digestive tract of a child is much more sensitive than an adult’s and is much more susceptible to issues that are caused by food poisoning. The most common bacterial infection seen in children that causes food poisoning is E. Coli which causes stool to turn shades of light to dark green and is the main reason for green poop in toddlers. It is necessary to visit a professional if you see the symptoms are lasting for over 3 days.

  1. Other Health Disorders

There are many other issues as well that can cause green poop in toddlers which may include crohn’s disease, mal-absorption of bile, presence of mucus in stool and so on.
