While pulmonary ventilation is the process by which oxygen enters and carbon dioxide exits the alveoli, respiration is the process by which oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse in and out of the blood. Respiration is also referred to as gas exchange, and it occurs in two areas of the body.

Pulmonary respiration- Pulmonary respiration is a term that is used for respiration through lungs. The mechanism of pulmonary respiration comprises of the movement of breathing, exchange of gasses in lungs, transport of gasses by blood and exchange of gasses by tissue.

Breathing Movement-The thoracic cavity present in our body is an air-tight chamber that is enclosed in front by the vertebral column, in the back by the sternum, side- ways by ribs, anteriorly by the neck and posteriorly by the diaphragm. The Diaphragm is a dome-shaped partition of skeletal muscle in between thoracic cavity and abdominal cavity.

Respiration through lungs is called pulmonary respiration.

The system of pulmonary respiration: It incorporates breathing movement, interchange of gasses, in lungs, transport of gasses by blood and exchange of gases by tissue.

The thoracic depression is a water/air proof chamber which is encased dorsally by vertebral segment, ventrally by sternum, along the side by ribs, anteriorly by neck and posteriorly by diaphragm. Diaphragm is a dome-shaped partition of skeletal muscle in the middle of thoracic cavity and stomach cavity.

Breathing incorporates two process- inspiration and expiration. Inspiration is a procedure of admission of air into lungs. It is an active process. Expiration is a process of expulsion of air from the lung.
