Symptoms of an ear infection often start within a week after the start of a cold or other upper respiratory infection. It may include:
- Mild pain or discomfort inside the ear, dizziness, vertigo or impaired balance
- A feeling of pressure inside the ear persists, especially when person is lying down
- Drainage from the ear that is thick and yellow or bloody. This means the eardrum has probably burst. The whole in the eardrum often heals by itself in a few weeks.
- Redness in the outer ear accompanied by warmth and pain.
