Hi Garry,

Well, Pneumonia is indeed a contagious disease and can easily be spread from one person to another. Since it is caused by bacteria or virus, Pneumonia is contagious.

The pathogens or organisms that are present in the human body in case of Pneumonia can travel to other human being when we cough or sneeze. The droplets of cough and sneeze are carriers of these bacteria and viruses.

The primary causes of Pneumonia are bacteria and virus. When a person breathes air contaminated by these organisms in their lungs, they place themselves in the air sacs called alveoli and continue multiplying. People with strong immune systems are able to get rid of these problem causing organisms, but those will weak immune systems can easily fall prey to them. To fight with these organisms, the body sends out blood cells which result in filled up of the alveoli with pus, thereby causing Pneumonia. The causes of Pneumonia can be bacteria, virus or even fungus.

The symptoms of Pneumonia are very peculiar in nature. The list includes:

- High fever which can go up to 104 F
- Night chills
- Cough accompanied by mucus
- Green/Yellow coloured mucus or sputum discharge from lungs
- Shortness of breath
- Rapid breathing
- Chest pain which worsens on breathing out
- Rapid heartbeat
- Extreme fatigue
- Weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Body ache
- Vomiting and nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Confusion or difficulty in concentrating
- Sudden sweating accompanied by chills
- Frequent urination
- Bluish skin due to lack of oxygen

In extreme cases of Pneumonia, the person can experience extreme bouts of fever and shaking chills with difficulty in breathing as the lungs are completed filled with fluid and pus.

Pneumonia is a condition which requires immediate medical attention and even hospitalization in some cases. The doctors may prescribe antibiotics or other medicines depending on the type of Pneumonia after you undergo tests like chest x-rays, sputum culture and other blood tests. Home remedies are useful in coping up with the symptoms and providing temporary relief.

Herbal teas, basal leaves, black pepper, turmeric, olive oil, honey and ginger syrup, plenty of water and fluids are some items that can provide relief and be useful in case of Pneumonia. Not very sure about the detailed remedies though. Remember to drink lots of water, as it helps in coping up with the side effects of strong Pneumonia medication.
Direct answer for your question i.e. Is pneumonia contagious? answer would be yes it is contagious.

Pneumonia is a respiratory condition that is defined by irritation in the lungs due to a bacterial, viral or contagious disease. The immune system of the human body keeps the harmful germs from affecting the lungs but sometimes they may succeed in defeating the immune system and may cause problems.

Majority of the times, acute problems may occur and clears up in a few weeks. In few cases, it can turn out to be intense and may even prove to be lethal. It is especially hazardous for newborn children, teenagers, elderly (65 years or more), and individuals who have low immunity.

Symptoms of Pneumonia are fever, shivering, chills, and shortness of breath, headache, loss of hunger, exhaustion, sweating, queasiness and retching, pain in the muscles, and difficulty in breathing.

Here are the main home solutions for pneumonia:

Garlic has antimicrobial properties that helps in destruction of harmful bacteria and other pathogens. It likewise decreases the body temperature and helps in expulsion of the mucus from the lungs.

Mix equal amounts of milk and water. Then to this add 1 ½ teaspoon of crushed garlic to it. Heat it until only ¼ of the mixture remains. Take this drink at least 3 times a day for best results.

You can also take garlic by mixing equal amounts of crushed garlic and fresh lemon juice. Take this 3-4 times a day to get relief. You can also have ginger tea if you are suffering from pneumonia.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne Pepper has high capsaicin content that helps in expulsion of mucous from the respiratory organs. Cayenne pepper also contains beta-carotene, which helps in maintaining the level of body fluids.

Blend some lemon juice and a dash of cayenne pepper in an eight-ounce glass of water. Drink it 2 times each day. You can also mix cayenne pepper in some carrot juice. Both remedies are effecting in treating Pneumonia.

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek has mucolytic properties, that is, it dilutes the thick mucus that gets accumulated at the time of Pneumonia. Moreover, it prompts sweating which decreases fever and expels poisons from the body.

One can make fenugreek tea by adding 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in 500 ml water. Strain and drink fenugreek tea at least once a day. To enhance its taste, you can include a small amount of lemon juice. Decrease the quantity of Tea you drink as you feel better.

Sesame Seeds

This homemade remedy removes mucus as sesame seeds go about as a characteristic expectorant. Mix 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds in water. After that, add 1 tablespoon of linseed (flaxseeds) and keep mixing. Strain the blend and after that include 1 teaspoon of honey and a pinch of salt. Drink this blend at least once a day for best results.

Vegetable Juice

Fresh carrot juice, spinach juice, beet root juice, cucumber juice, and other vegetable juices are fabulous for your health, particularly when managing pneumonia. They help immunity, break down mucus, and help in detoxification. Being rich in phosphorus and chlorine is very advantageous for your lungs.
