what is the difference between hematoma and ecchymosis

Hematoma and Ecchymosis are sometimes used alternatively. But they have different meaning. A Hematoma is a collection of clotted blood outside a blood vessel. An Ecchymosis is also commonly known as a bruise that is blood leaked out from a blood vessel under the skin.

Hematomas are inflammations and has more of a 3-dimensional character to it, while ecchymosis are even. As well, hematomas may happen in any organ and not just under the skin like ecchymosis. Do not get confused with Hemorrhage which is active bleeding, Hematomas and ecchymosis explains blood that has already clotted
